- Grew up as a competitive basketball player and swimmer, but took a break from sports around age 12 to recover from recurring knee injuries. Took up running at 14 and went on to run collegiately
- Reinjured knee playing flag football after college; was told she should stop running; had just started PT school so chose PT instead of surgeries
- Grandfather on father's side competed in 1952 USA Olympic Trials in 110m hurdles
